Christian Dior

Christian Dior (1905-1957) served in the French army and then also worked as an art dealer. He opened his couture house in 1946 in Paris and with his collection in Spring 1947 created a ‘new look’ which was a silhouette with a large bust, plentiful skirt and nipped in waist which after the austerity of rationing during the war was an exuberant use of fabric. Silk scarves were brought in 1950’s and Dior was one of the first couture houses to see the potential in branded scarves using the repeated monochrome print in their original scarves.
